A BINGE drinker will be unable to have a weekend night out for six months after he made two unprovoked attacks in York city centre.

The Recorder of York Judge Stephen Ashurst spared Patrick Stephen Ryder Hall, 28, an immediate jail term as his grandfather is terminally ill and Hall pleaded guilty.

He suspended a nine-month sentence for two years on condition Hall observes a 10-hour nightly curfew on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, for six months and does 12 months’ supervision and a binge drinking rehabilitation course. He must pay his first victim £1,500.

The judge said: “It is quite clear your behaviour was unrestrained.”

Hall, of Pottery Lane, York, pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm and a public order offence.

Richard Butters, prosecuting, told York Crown Court 10 to 15 people were fighting in the street outside Vanity in New Street in the early hours of November 10. The first victim went outside when he heard shouting. He told an unknown man to clear off and Hall “out of the blue” punched him on the head and face four times while saying “come on then”. He suffered injuries to his mouth, face and ear. The victim never lost consciousness. Hall also punched a second man who did not make a police statement.

For Hall, Alex Menary said he had taken his grandfather’s illness very badly and turned to drink. He was remorseful for his actions.

• Hall was jailed for three years in 2008 for aggravated burglary because, in drink, he had joined a gang which invaded a Norton house.
