RECENT proposals regarding the EU ‘in/out’ referendum seem to omit the crucial details of how such a vote would be carried out.

Given that our country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland (a union of four countries) that even with a simple yes/no answer it would not be acceptable for ‘yes to leave’ result to be enough to authorise the resignation of the UK from the EU.

Given that the majority of voters are in England, the result would have to be carried on agreement of all four countries, assuming the Scots are still with us.

In other words the vote would have to be won country by country not just on the total number of votes. Anything else will be a corruption of the whole process in my opinion. It is certain that the Scots and probably the Welsh would wish to remain within the EU and avoid the catastrophe of resignation which would wreck the British economy and shatter the remains of the United Kingdom.
