A SUMMIT on river safety will be held in York later this month, following the recent death of student Megan Roberts.

The body of the 20-year-old was discovered in the Ouse at Acaster Malbis on March 2, six weeks after she went missing on a night out, adding to the tally of river deaths in York in recent years.

The summit on March 25 at York St John University will include North Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan, City of York Council’s cabinet member for stronger communities Coun Linsay Cunningham-Cross, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Pubwatch, York’s universities, students’ unions and voluntary groups.

Coun Cunningham-Cross said: “It is critically important that we, as partners, review what has happened not just in recent weeks, but over a longer period to establish how river safety is approached by everybody.”

Ms Mulligan said risks posed by drinking were likely to be a key part of the talks, saying: “The desperately sad events of recent weeks have again highlighted the need to do everything possible to keep people safe.”
