A GROUP of York rugby union juniors are hoping to be crowned the kings of the county next weekend.
York RUFC Under-12s have reached the final of the Yorkshire Cup and will play Morley on home soil on March 23.
The young Clifton Parkers came through a qualifying group which included Wetherby, Richmondshire, Wensleydale, Otley and Harrogate before demolishing Wetherby 33-0 in their first knockout round.
A tough quarter-final at Hull came next and the sides drew 14-14. York went through on the away draw rule.
It was no more comfortable at Mosborough, in South Yorkshire, but the York lads fashioned a 21-14 triumph to book their spot in the final.
Stars of the side included Tom Robins, Eddie Hargreaves and Theo Smerdon.
Simon Gilson-Fox, team manager and backs coach, said reaching the final was a tremendous achievement.
“Everyone is delighted,” he said. “It’s going to be quite an event. We’ve been watching their results and we will be going in as underdogs but it is going to be very tight.”
The team’s head coach is Ron Zuiderwijk, assisted by Mark Stenton and Gilson-Fox.
