MOTHER’S Day this and Mother’s Day that. My email inbox has been bombarded with gift ideas for mum, from PR executives who obviously think I write about kitchen products; pamper weekends and ‘healthy’ low fat snacks.
I have also had one or two emails that suggest certain wines will make, “an ideal Mother’s Day gift”.
I guess quite a few mums would be happy to receive a bottle: as long as there are flowers and chocolates too!
I’ve picked out three wines which I think mums, those who drink wine, would be more than happy to receive.
Yali National Reserva Viognier 2012 is great value for money, if you make the most of Majestic’s current “buy two” offer. It is very approachable and perfect for sipping without food but it will match well with pork.
From the Colchagua Valley in Chile, this is a very appealing, New World take on the grape. Quite rich and round in the mouth, it has oodles of peach, apricot and tropical fruit flavour, with honeysuckle, spices and a fresh acidity.
If mum likes a smooth, classy red then a bottle of Diane de Belgrave 2009, Haut-Médoc, the second wine of Château Belgrave, will no doubt go down a treat. It is a really well made, elegant and balanced claret.
In essence it is a 50-50 mix of cabernet sauvignon and merlot but with a little petit verdot and cab franc in the equation. It has long flavours of cherry, plum, cassis and chocolate, with spicy notes and some supple tannins.
Or splash out on a bottle of fizz such as Champagne Esterlin Cuvée Cléo. This non-vintage sparkler, which comes in a very stylish bottle, is a blanc de blanc. In other words it is made only with chardonnay; it makes for a top notch aperitif.
Light and elegant, it is biscuity with subtle flavours of lemon, mineral notes and a fine stream of persistent bubbles, which give a creamy mouth-feel.
