TWO suspected drug dealers have been arrested after an early morning drug raid in a York suburb.

The 49 year old man and a 21 year old man were both arrested just after 8am on Saturday when officers from the York West policing teams and the neighbourhood support team carried out a warrant on a home on Jute Road, in Acomb.

Officers confirmed they were acting on information from the community when the carried out the raid in the quiet early Saturday morning hours, and said they wanted the raids to send a message to people in York that they would not tolerate drug dealing the city.

Police in three vans arrived at the house not long after 8am and broke the door down, before carrying out a painstaking search of the house and garden for more than two hours.

The older man was lead out of the house at around 9am, but police were still on the scene almost two hours later. The younger man was arrested later in the day, both on suspicion of possessing drugs with intent to supply.

After the raid, police confirmed they found and seized drugs, believed to be cannabis, along with cash at the house.

A police sniffer dog was used to search the detached house, garden and six sheds, which were protected with “Beware of the dog” signs, CCTV, and notices warning visitors to keep off the private property and CCTV.

Neighbours said the house often had a lot of cars visiting it but was otherwise unremarkable on the residential street.

At the raid was Holgate and Acomb beat manager PC Andy Chapman. He said he hoped the raid would make it clear the police would not put up with drug supply in York, and encouraged anyone with information or worries about drugs in their neighbourhood to come forward.

He added: “We want people in York to know that we listen to what those in the community say.

“We will not tolerate the supply of drugs of any kind in North Yorkshire.”

Later, North Yorkshire Police control room posted a tweet about the arrests, saying the force had been able plan the raid because of information that came from the community.

Both men were later released on police bail while enquiries continued.

PC Chapman added: “If you know anyone who you suspect to be involved within the drugs supply in the area, please ring North Yorkshire Police in 101.”
