A DRUNKEN racegoer who injured two people by smashing a champagne bottle during a punch-up was fined £1,000.

Daniel Flynn, 24, snapped when an argument broke out with other men near Gate 9 of York Racecourse.

He had been enjoying a day out at York Races with his father, his grandfather and others when trouble flared last May.

York Crown Court was told to this day Flynn had no idea what the dispute was about.

But during the disturbance, he was seen to pick up a table and throw it about, said prosecutor Aisha Wadoodi.

“He then smashed an empty champagne bottle on the ground.

Glass flew in a number of directions,”she added.

One of the two men injured was Flynn’s own father.

The other was another South Yorkshire man, Richard Hill, who needed treatment for cuts and bruises to his face and body.

Both escaped with minor injuries.

Glenn Parsons, mitigating, said his client “would be the first to admit his actions were nothing short of disgraceful.

“He accepted he could have taken a step back. But in drink he took a step forward.”

Punches and objects were thrown on both sides but the trouble makers were dispersed and no one else was arrested.

Flynn, of Wadworth Road, Sheffield, admitted affray and possessing a small amount of cocaine.

He was also ordered to pay £500 court costs.
