CHECKS have revealed “widespread” risks with part-worn tyres fitted on cars in East Yorkshire.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s trading standards teams surveyed traders supplying the tyres and said many were poorly labelled, safety checks were limited and some unsafe tyres had been seized.
Three traders will receive warning letters, with failure to comply carrying fines of up to £5,000 or a six-month prison sentence, and all tyre-sellers have been given legal guidance with more unannounced inspections planned.
Paul Abbott, the council’s public protection services group manager, said: “Over the past four years, the number of retailers of part-worn tyres in this area has jumped from five to well over 30 - more people are dealing in these tyres than ever before.”
