RECENTLY a 22-year-old woman was fighting for her life in Lincoln after a serious attack by a dog. Two infants have also been savaged to death by dogs in the past few weeks.
Every year thousands of people are injured, many seriously, following dog attacks and there have been 18 deaths in the past eight years. And last year after an infant had its finger bitten by a fox there were widespread calls for a fox cull. I can find no record of anyone being killed by a fox.
Last year there were also calls for a deer cull as they’re apparently breeding unchecked and causing destruction to the countryside. And there are calls for a badger cull as well.
However, we wouldn’t dream of culling dogs despite all the deaths and attacks. Do we have any right to cull anything? Surely all animals have a right to live in their habitat. If we do start culling then we should perhaps start with ourselves.
