STEPHEN LEWIS and Anne Blincoe – “Yesterday Once More, March 10” – nudged the memory of many of York’s older generation reminding us once again that York should be forever proud of its greatest son, Joseph Rowntree, through his love of mankind.
The story and photographs of Dunollie in Scarborough represent a part of his immense enthusiasm for improving health and family life for his many employees.
Dunollie was an imposing building with immaculate gardens and a homely interior. Each individual guest room tastefully decorated.
Our excellent meals were prepared by a daunting Mrs Bridges - like character whose dulcet tones before noon were more Rod Stewart than Maria Callas.
At all times the atmosphere was very friendly, not least when a fellow guest organised a sweep for the Epsom Derby day and a teenage sensation called Lester Piggott rode his first Derby winner and went on to win eight more.
Amusingly, as we were all there to recover after illness, the horse was called “Never Say Die” and I won.
It is hoped that the campaign to erect a statue of the great man will be honoured. Appropriately near to where he was born in Pavement, York.
