FULFORD moved to the top of the York Conservative Clubs’ Faber Shield Billiards League for the first time this season after beating Bootham ‘B’ 5-1.
Terry Ward (44 break) gave them a start with a six-point success against Matt Smith and captain Alan Reed made it 2-0.
Ian Robinson stopped the run, but Bob Plant and Glen Mountain (20 break), who held off Tim Fillingham (20 break), sealed the victory.
Fulford lead by three and a half points and need only two points to clinch the title when they meet Bootham ‘B’ in the final fixture.
Bottom side Bootham ‘A’ registered only their second win of the season with a 5-1 success at Acomb.
Jeff Brown (39 break) came from behind to end Richard Lillie’s hopes of being player of the year, and Barry Rankin (28 break) made it 2-0. Ken Taylor continued the sequence and built a 98-point aggregate advantage.
Mick Borg gained Acomb’s sole point, but Colin Robinson (23 break) rallied to ensure a 52 aggregate lead. Stuart Martel completed the victory, which meant Acomb finish in third spot.
Fulford’s Mountain and Reed are joint leaders in the Cameo Engraving player of the year competition, each with eight wins in ten games.
