ONE man’s trash is another man’s treasure, an event in York aims to prove.
St Nicks Environment Centre, off Melrosegate, is hosting a picnic with a difference - after people have enjoyed their lunch, they are invited to make a piece of art from the rubbish.
They will be watched over by a giant dinosaur called Trashasaurus, a sculpture created by York resident Michelle Wyatt from a year-long collection of non-recyclable plastic waste.
Michelle said: “I’ve watched videos about Midway Islands where hundreds of albatrosses die due to our plastic waste, which they feed to their chicks. Rather than being depressed I wanted to do something about it. I’ve created the Trashasaurus to help people realise how serious the issue is and what they can do about it.”
The art session will be led by Derbyshire recycled media artist, Nicky Ward, and her ‘Art Tea’ team who will be using all the stuff you would ordinarily throw away. The resulting artwork and a film of its creation will be exhibited at the renowned Wirksworth Festival in Derbyshire before being donated back to St Nicks.
The event will run from 11.30am to 3.30pm on Sunday, March 23.
