YORK 'A' ended a fantastic season by claiming their seventh consecutive win in Yorkshire Over-55s League division one when they beat New Earswick.

The Thanet Road outfit won 83-66 on aggregate, picking up 16 out of the 18 points at stake, but the game was not as easy as the final score suggested.

New Earswick threatened to take the match when they led 58-53, but York 'A' finished well, scoring 20 shots over the last three ends and only letting slip eight.

At Thanet Road, Graham Instone's team went from 4-4 after six ends against Bill Waldie's team to lead 17-4 after 12. Instone's team went on to win 25-12.

Ralph Tiplady's team scored three twos in succession to go from 5-2 down to lead Malcolm Thompson’s side 8-5. They kept the lead up to the penultimate end, where they dropped a two to go 19-18 behind.

A single on the last sealed a great comeback for Thompson’s side as they won 20-18 after being 17-12 down with five to play.

At Huntington Road, both home teams got off to good starts, with Bob Edwards leading Phil Parsons side 11-0 after only five ends and Barry Johnson’s leading Graham Brooke’s rink 11-6 after 12 ends.

Brooke’s side hit back to win all but one of the remaining nine ends to triumph 19-12 and Parsons scored a four on the 20th end to make the score 19-18 in his favour.

However, he was outdone as Edwards secured New Earswick's only winning rink with a six on the last to finish 24-19.

York 'B's dismal season finished with a heavy 111-57 defeat against Selby, the only winning rink coming from Mike Snowden's home team who came from 11-8 down to lead 16-11.

They held on to the lead despite dropping a four on the last to finish 23-20.

Next Tuesday, York play Dolphin in the Vivienne Trophy final at Northampton IBC. The club are running a coach for the team and supporters leaving Thanet Road at 8.45am.

York are again at Northampton next Thursday when their Mason Trophy team play County Arts in the semi-finals. If successful, they also play the following day at 9.30am.

New Earswick host the Yorkshire League Challenge Trophy on Saturday.

The competition will involve division one champions Featherstone, runners-up Selby, third-placed Scarborough and division two champions Redcar.

On Sunday, Thanet Road hosts the Hebden Challenge Cup involving between York, New Earswick, Selby and Leeds.
