THE Liberal Democrat Group will move a motion at next Thursday’s full council calling on Labour to end the Lendal Bridge trial (The Press, March 11).
As many will know, the six-month trial was meant to finish on February 27.
However, Labour have extended the restrictions to at least May while they decide what to do next. Our motion calls on them to make a decision. They have the trial data, they have seen the public and business reaction and need to make a decision. The dithering hfrom Labour has to stop.
We believe this has been a botched closure which has damaged city-centre businesses, damaged the reputation of York and failed to achieve the aims of easing congestion, improving overall bus times or improving air quality.
If Labour agrees, they should act now and end the trial. If they disagree then they need to explain to residents why they think the closure should be extended and/or made permanent.
Decisive leadership is needed. We would lift the restrictions and reopen Lendal Bridge. What do Labour want to do?
Coun Keith Aspden, Leader of the Liberal Democrat group, Main Street, Fulford, York.
