There has been racing at York’s Knavesmire for almost 300 years - since 1731, in fact. And fine sport it makes.
There is a Yorkshire horse race that makes York look like a newcomer to the scene, however. The Kiplingcotes Derby is thought to have been held every March since 1519 - making it not only Yorkshire’s, but England’s oldest race.
Yesterday, something like 500 spectators cheered home the winner, Willie, at the end of the 495th derby, run on a four-mile course across tracks and farm lanes near Market Weighton.
Long may this unique Yorkshire event continue.
