MORE than one in four people in York pour used cooking oil down the sink, according to a survey assessing the causes of blocked drains.
The YouGov poll said 27 per cent of adults in the city disposed of their leftover oil in this way, an identical figure to a 2011 survey.
It has been claimed the average household throws away a teacup of oil every month, which could be recycled into clean electricity, and that 57 per cent would take it to a local recycling centre if they knew where it was.
Ian Collins, managing director of Living Fuels, which operates 500 waste cooking oil collection tanks, said residents should realise the oil is “a precious resource”.
