YORK CITY Rowing Club shone at the annual Yorkshire Head event held on the River Ouse.

The Lendal-based outfit won in 15 event categories and the senior men's eight, rowing in the intermediate 2 division, was the fastest local boat - finishing fourth overall.

The junior eights won their class and finished seventh overall in a time just 22 seconds behind their senior compatriots.

The overall winners were Hampton School, who rowed the 5.1km time from Rawcliffe to Lendal Bridge in just over 16 minutes to win by more than 25 seconds.

Some 220 crews from clubs throughout the North of England and the Midlands competed in the event.

The two halves of the junior section split to enjoy a tight race in the J18 coxless quad - placing first and second and separated by less than two seconds. The winners were the crew of Ed Etheridge, Ed Press, Chris Burgess and James Turton.

The junior section boats performed well overall, the girls winning all seven of the events they entered including the W.IM3 coxless and the WJ16A coxless quads.

Very creditable single scull wins were recorded by the Downing sisters, Jess in W.IM2.1x and Sally in W.IM3 1x open (over 18) events

The junior boys crew, coxed by Jess Downing, won the J14A coxed quads and there was also success in the J162X double sculls event.

York City men's masters D eight won their event and were placed 11th overall. The masters C quads won the B/C/D Handicap double sculls.

Other York clubs were well represented in the Head, but Guy Fawkes was the only other successful city club.

The rowing club, of past pupils and parents of St Peter's School, won the masters E eights, novice quads, novice double sculls and women's novice coxed fours.
