I’ve just had a UKIP leaflet pushed through my door and there were quite a few things which didn’t make sense to me, so I wondered if a representative of UKIP could reply here to just two of my points.

Firstly, I’d like to know why they describe wind-farms as ‘inefficient’? The National Grid has confirmed what is obvious, that wind power is supplying an increasing amount of our electricity, 11 per cent in February, beating the last record of 10 per cent last December, which is equivalent to the needs of over 6.5 million homes.

A large wind turbine produces so much electricity that it takes only six months for it to ‘pay off’ its embodied carbon cost, that is, the energy needed to construct, transport and erect it, after which, it is clean, pollution free energy.

Secondly, the leaflet mentions investing in ‘clean coal’.The leaflet sent me to their online “straight talking manifesto for the local elections 2012” which has no further information about what this is.

So, I’d like a definition of what is meant by ‘clean coal’, bearing in mind that the technology of ‘carbon capture and storage’ is as yet unproven on a large power station.
