I’VE reached the age of ‘what might have been’.
In 1972 a Compulsory Purchase Order was made for the acquisition of dozens of houses and businesses on the route of the proposed inner ring road between Lord Mayor’s Walk and Scarcroft Road.
Work was due to start in 1974. Most of Gillygate was bought by the council at rock bottom- prices. We were one of the few residents who held fast. After all the anxiety and concern, it was not to reach completion. Would it have been an improvement, it almost happened?
PS: See booklet published by the Yorkshire Evening Press, price 7s 6d Lord Eshers York ‘A Study in Conservation’ dated 1969. There is quite a history to all this!
