IN REPLY to Mr B Redwood (Letters, March 19): we cyclists when riding in a group have on occasions to communicate. The most often phrase you will hear coming from our peloton on our Wednesday rides is “pothole”!
The leader of each sub-group, (in our club this could be up to 15 riders), has the responsibility to warn all his team of the many cavities in the road surface we encounter on our seventy mile rides.
The message is then cascaded through the group – any lack of communication could be catastrophic. It is also the responsibility of the leader to warn of approaching vehicles from the front (the “tail end Charlie” warns of vehicles approaching from the rear).
We have an elaborate protocol to ensure that we complete our rides safely. I do hope that fellow road users understand this and are tolerant of our needs.
