STAFF at a York supermarket cafe have been named as community heroes by a disabled couple who say their cheerful manners and helpful natures helps them get out and about.
Barbara Pettitt, 77, says the staff at Morrisons cafe on Foss Bank give such good customer service that they deserve The Press's Community Pride Service with a Smile Award.
Mrs Pettitt has nominated the cafe team for the award, which shines a spotlight on businesses with outstanding customer care and charities that work to benefit of people in York.
Mrs Pettitt said the "charming and cheerful" service she and her husband get on their weekly trips to Morrisons makes it a day out they look forward to each week and as they are both disabled they depend on the helpful cafe staff to make their visits go smoothly.
Cafe manager Julie Boyes, who has been at the store since it opened seven years ago, said she was thrilled to see her team of 20 staff acknowledged.
The store's deputy general manager Glen McGurk said: "It's great the cafe has been recognised, and it is very gratifying and pleasing to get such positive feedback. Long may it continue."
Mrs Pettitt has now thrown down the gauntlet for others to nominate their community heroes for the recognition they deserve, but would never seek for themselves.
She said: "I like to see rewards go to people who deserve them, and people like this are the real heart of York."
The 13 categories in the Community Pride awards recognise individuals and groups, and we want to receive your nominations.
Nominees must live in the City of York Council area or make a contribution to life in the city. Three finalists from each category will be invited to the awards ceremony at York Racecourse in October, when the winners will be revealed.
