A NEW community food-growing project sowed its first seeds at the Upper St Paul’s play area, Holgate, on Saturday, March 22 between 10am and 12pm.
The project, which was launched at the initiative of the local community, follows the creation of a community gardening group for children who will be able to learn how to grow food.
Gill Stern, leader community gardener at the National Trust, is supervising the project and will provide advice, supported by the City of York Council and Edible York.
It has been made possible thanks to the hard work of volunteers, including some from Aviva, who, coordinated by York Cares, prepared the new flower beds and cleaned overgrown existing ones.
Jenny Cairns, council representative for the project, said there was a lively atmosphere last Wednesday when volunteers got to work., with local residents bringing tea and cake She hopes that even more people will be attended today.
Councillor Sonja Crisp, Cabinet Member for Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism said: “This is a great project to allow the local community to develop their green space into something they can use and value.”
