ROSE BERL (Letters, March 22) is right to point out that while the council made mistakes on signage, the Lendal Bridge trial is a brave move to break the vicious circle of growing traffic discouraging walking and cycling and delaying bus services.
A ‘yellow card’ warning system for first offenders would ensure visitors are not put off coming again and deal with genuine error.
Both Lib Dem and Tory parties are cynically exploiting the hostility of some motorists to the scheme, yet have no alternative solution to illegal air pollution levels and future creeping descent into traffic gridlock.
Would they fund a new bridge, or close Ouse Bridge instead? Penalise bus users by removing all bus lanes? Or support green solutions, such as our proposal for a free shuttle bus (as in Sheffield and Bradford) to link the station to the hospital, city centre shops and car parks?
York city centre needs to consider solutions that have worked in historic continental cities, extending foot streets and reducing traffic while providing for essential public transport and service access.
Cllr Andy D’Agorne, York Green Party , Broadway West, York.
