A THEATRICAL show which takes place in the whole town will be performed in Selby this summer, as part of a cultural festival.
The On Our Turf project is led by York Theatre Royal to strengthen links between art and communities in four Yorkshire market towns – Pocklington, Selby, Easingwold and Helmsley.
ICARUS is a piece of work commissioned for the project by Fine Chisel. about “what it means to be ambitious and a little bit reckless”, and “a story about how small towns respond to big dreams”.
The show draws together local choirs, musicians, crafts folk and performers, with shows that start in the local church before being led through the story into the night in the middle of town.
Alex Wright, producer from York Theatre Royal, said: “It’s genuinely exciting to make work not only with a community, but using the town as a stage. The journey’s been wonderful and the show is going to be extraordinary.”
Tom Spencer, artistic director of Fine Chisel, said: “Making this show is a huge adventure – for us, for the organisers, and for the brilliantly talented local people we’re working with to bring it to life. What brings together a master rocking-horse maker, an African drumming group, local schoolchildren and a band of folk musicians?
“A piece of promenade theatre might not be your first answer, but it works! There is nothing more exciting than hearing a choir sing songs we’ve written, and beginning to imagine what the experience will be like for audiences as the piece plays out across each town.”
ICARUS will run on the following dates: Pocklington, April 5 and 6, 7.30pm Selby, April 11 and 12 at 7.30pm with a 2.30pm matinee on April 12 Easingwold, April 15 and 16 at 7.30pm Helmsley, April 26 and 27 at 7.30pm
