IT IS only a personal opinion, but I can’t agree with the sentiments expressed by your correspondent in The Press of March 22.
How can it be considered “brave” or “courageous” to spend thousands of pounds of other people’s money, without their approval and in the face of many objections?
Residents may have differing opinions, but a city which relies heavily on tourism cannot afford to antagonise visitors.
Perhaps when the “experiment” was designed, it was not the intent to fleece travellers of thousands of pounds in a few months, but I suspect the powers that be are not displeased. Also, how do visitors know which bridge is Lendal?
As an example, approaching York on the A59, a few yards short of Holgate Bridge, there is the usual “restricted access” sign. The unsuspecting traveller could well interpret that the bridge ahead is indeed Lendal Bridge. Do other bridges have signs saying: “You are welcome to cross here”?
As for the assertion that the closure may prompt people to seek alternative means of transport, I suggest that all it will do is prompt people to seek other places to visit.
