THE Press of March 21 reports the latest situation which City of York Council is considering whether to abandon the Lendal Bridge closure or extend the period of closure.
The evidence is that six Park & Ride services had increased journey times (how much?); three improved (how much?); and one remained unchanged. Not much of a result considering the disruption endured.
There is little or no evidence that more people were encouraged to walk. Pollution can only have been moved around the city since traffic does not seem to be reduced, just redirected.
The most important result must be that York’s reputation with visitors was damaged and businesses harmed. This alone must make the decision obvious. Don’t close Lendal Bridge.
