THERE is nothing new about major films and TV dramas being shot in Yorkshire. The TV version of Brideshead Revisited was first screened more than 30 years ago.
But in the past two years, Yorkshire has been coming into its own as a location, with TV dramas such as Death Comes to Pemberley and Peaky Blinders and films like Get Santa all being filmed here.
It is partly Yorkshire’s magical landscapes and stunning heritage that make it so popular with producers. But the county’s growing reputation as the ‘Hollywood of England’ is also due in part to Sally Joynson and her team at Screen Yorkshire.
Since 2012 they have helped entice producers here by investing nearly £7 million in 18 major productions. They’re doing a great job. The economic benefits to the region are thought to be worth about £15 million a year. Then there is the boost to Yorkshire tourism from the TV and big screen exposure.
And as to the delight of being able to watch film crews at work in York and elsewhere... well, that’s just priceless.
