STEVE GREGSON will meet Dan Potter in the final of the York Masters snooker tournament tomorrow, writes Steve Carroll.
Former professional Gregson beat Lee Taylor 4-1 in his semi-final, while Potter saw off Glen Mountain 4-0 to make the showpiece event, which will be held on a World Snooker standard table above Adrian Barraclough’s Quickslide showroom in Layerthorpe from 6pm.
Tournament favourite Gregson was made to work hard by Malton’s Taylor. A cagey opening frame was marked by excellent safety from the latter, who eked out a 63-31 success.
Breaks of 21 and 31 took Gregson level and a crucial miss by Taylor when in the balls in frame three was capitalised on as Gregson struck 59 to go 2-1 up.
The fourth frame could have gone either way - with both players making 30 breaks before finding trouble. Taylor looked set to level until Gregson’s 40 clearance gave him a 3-1 lead.
A comfortable 82-27 win in frame five sealed the match and Gregson’s place in the final.
Potter, in the other semi-final, started off like a house on fire.
A 52 break in the first frame and a 52-29 win in frame two put him in control. Mountain looked to be pulling a frame back when 41-0 up in the third with six reds left.
But Potter surged back and potted green to pink to take it 59-49. It ended any hopes of a comeback from Mountain and Potter wrapped up the win with a 30 break in frame four as he recorded a 75-29 success.
