IN REPLY to Peter Hawley’s letter (“Horns mystery” – The Press, March 20), I can explain.
Following a recent reassessment of the public footpath level crossing located approximately quarter of a mile south of the A1237 road-over-rail bridge, we identified the need for additional protection at the crossing.
This was due to the curvature of the track in the direction towards York. A whistle board has been installed at a distance of 400 metres before reaching this level crossing for Scarborough-bound trains and the train driver is obliged to operate the train warning horn. This provides crossing users’ with advanced audible warning of an approaching train.
