COMPILATION records – they can be the scourge of the average. From Now 10,356 (will they ever stop producing this?) to 20 Tracks For That Mid-Autumnal Weekend, barely a week goes by without another Best Of being unleashed on to a tired audience.
But this one, a selection of live tracks from Dermot O’Leary’s weekly BBC Radio 2 show, has consistently broken the mould. And the latest collection, thankfully, continues that. Variety is the key, here – and the most unlikely of covers. Where else could you find Stereophonics performing a version of Bob Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues, Turin Brakes warbling through Chim Chim Cher-ee or Ben Howard taking on Simon and Garfunkel’s classic The Boxer?
Let Robeson Sing, the wonderful Manic Street Preachers track, and the Editors’ Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors, are among 40 included – some stripped back – in an assortment that never fails to grab the attention.
