AS a car driver commuting during the school terms, I encounter children on bicycles from two schools (Joseph Rowntree and Canon Lee).
Some of the teenagers riding the bicycles seem to have a total lack of awareness for other road users and for this reason I am sure an accident is waiting to happen.
This week I saw a cyclist riding in the fog without lights or reflective clothing, and this morning I encountered three cyclists riding abreast in front of me, with one of the boys cycling with his hands in his pockets.
Now I don’t doubt he was able to balance but could he really say he was in control of his cycle?
None of the four cyclists mentioned was wearing a helmet and I am convinced that a serious accident is just a matter of time.
If car drivers are governed by law to wear seat belts isn’t it about time that cyclists should be made to wear safety equipment? What price are we willing to pay just to look cool in front of our friends?
