A COUPLE who met at a youth club dance in York in the 1940s are today celebrating their diamond wedding.
Marjorie and Alwyn Dobson, of Dringhouses, who got married at St Wilfrid's RC Church on April 3, 1954, are celebrating the anniversary with a family meal.
Mrs Dobson, 81, who used to be a keen dancer as well as a part-time model, said she met Alwyn while attending a dance at the Rowntree Youth Club in Haxby Road, when she was just 16.
Her husband, 84, who worked as a printer at Ben Johnson, was a keen footballer, who played for Cliftonville. He was even offered a professional apprenticeship with Hull City, but turned it down because the printing trade paid more money in those days.
The couple were also keen golfers, playing at Fulford Golf Club for many years. They had two children, Derek and Elaine, and five grandchildren.
Mrs Dobson said her recipe for a long marriage was to 'love each other - and a bit of give and take.'
