ARCHITECTS for the next stage of a restoration programme at York's Mansion House have been appointed.
De Matos Ryan will work with City of York Council to draw up the cost and timescales for the Opening Doors project, backed by £76,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), which includes restoring the St Helen's Square civic residence's 18th Century kitchens, improving its displays and access to its gold and silver collection and preparing a local history initiative.
The completed plans will be sent to HLF, which has provided funding to develop the proposals, in November and a decision on a full grant is expected early next year. José Esteves de Matos, director of De Matos Ryan, said: "We are thrilled to have been chosen to work with the Mansion House team to sensitively refurbish this magnificent building and develop a unique and dynamic visitor experience as one of the top cultural attractions in York."
Deputy council leader Coun Tracey Simpson-Laing said the HLF's support had moved the Mansion House closer to its "most comprehensive restoration" since it was completed in 1732. A consultation on the proposals will be held next month.
