ONE of The Press’ photographers made the shortlist for a prestigious award this week.

Anthony Chappel-Ross was nominated for Daily/Sunday Photographer of the Year in the annual Regional Press Awards, making a shortlist of just six, alongside Stuart Boulton and Mike Simmonds from The Press’ sister papers, The Northern Echo and the Bradford Telegraph & Argus respectively.

Anthony, 31, is no stranger to awards, having last year been named the Genesis Regional Photographer of the Year at the UK Picture Editors’ Guild Awards.

He also received the same honour in 2011, and has previously twice been named Newspaper Society Young Photographer of the Year, and was previously named O2 Photographer Of The Year for Yorkshire.

Judges selected his images of a soldier’s return from Afghanistan, Clifford’s Tower during Illuminate York, and a rider and horse falling at last year’s races.

Chairman of the judges Paul Horrocks said this year’s entries left the panel “astounded by the scale and quality of the entries.”

Martin Oates, picture editor at The Press, said: “Anthony has once again done tremendously well to reach the finals of another prestigious national photography competition. We’re very proud of him and his work.”

The prize was awarded to Will Johnston, of the Leicester Mercury, at a lunchtime ceremony at the Lancaster London Hotel yesterday, hosted by broadcaster Nick Ferrari, with scores of representatives from newspapers around the country in attendance.
