CELEBRATIONS have been held to mark a Centenary of Cub Scouting in Pickering.
The group held an open day at their headquarters with representatives from Beaver, Cub and Scout sections hosting displays as well as an historic exhibition of scouting memorability.
A wooden sculpture of a ‘Wolf Cub’ was also unveiled to mark the 100th anniversary of cub scouting in Pickering and a fun run for each of the group’s sections took place with the winners being presented with commemorative trophies.
Ray Bowman, Group Scout Leader said despite the wet weather it had been a successful and enjoyable day.
"It went very well with current members and their parents attending and we were also extremely pleases to see a number of former members who came along to see us," he added.
"The ‘Wolf Cub’ sculpture was made by Karl Barker of Stape and its stone plinth was cut and delivered by Drings of Hartoft our thanks for the supply and prompt delivery."
Scout leader, Richard Bowman, who has written a history of the Group, currently had approximately 85 members spread between three sections.
"Scouts in Pickering were established in 1910 and the Wolf Cub Pack, as part of the experimental Junior section in 1914, which makes the Pack one of the oldest in the world," he added.
"The two sections were finally made one as a Group in the 1920s under the leadership of a Group Scout Master."
Before the Second World War in the mid-1930s the 1st Pickering Scout Group amalgamated with the 1st Kirbymisperton Scouts to form the present 1st Vale of Pickering Scout Group.
Richard added: "It is not known exactly where the group met in the early days but with fundraising and hard work the group finally constructed a purpose built Headquarters in 1956 where the group has been situated since then, although the old headquarters was replaced in 2006 with our present building."
