ACTION resumed in the York Badminton League after the festive break with a surprise result when RI Tuesday/Thursday A' beat Clifton A' 5-4 in men's division one.
Daniel Woolfson and George Noble set the standard for Clifton with 138-110, but Ian Sinker and Wastern Siallagan upset the formbook by scoring a 24-22, 21-12 victory over Kevin Davison and Adam Clelland to seal RI's win.
University Staff Club hit top form in men's three to whitewash lacklustre Knavesmire with unbeaten Asri Awang and Rayner Alfred leading the way with 126-72.
Selby/Drax Ladies won 5-4 at Staff Club in ladies one even though they were a pairing short. Michelle Hall and Alison Dinsdale hit 143-104 for Selby, despite being pushed hard by Sue Scott and Sheila Mackarel before winning 17-21, 21-15, 21-16.
Clifton A' hit top form to thrash Riverside A' 9-0 in mixed one. Richard McIntosh and Karen Broster were the most dominant Clifton pair with a 130-91 return.
Riverside B' suffered two set-backs in mixed three, losing 5-4 at home to Nestl Rowntree B' and then 6-3 at Pocklington. The confectionery side's victory included 144-97 from Brenda Drummond and Mark Barker which included a decisive seven and 11 over Sarah Eaton and Nigel Stainforth.
The Pocklington defeat saw Sue Sharp and Ian McInlay take all three Riverside wins for 126-89.
Shepherd's B' had mixed fortunes in division four. They narrowly beat Fulfordgate B' 5-4 but then lost 6-3 at RI Tues/Thursday B'.
The Fulfordgate match saw Alan Taylor and Mary Tarbin complete their maximum with 21-14, 21-14 over John Maule and Hazel Winfield. Paul Forth and Ellen Mouney swung the match for RI against Shepherd's with three victories for 128-85, including a 15 and 13 over Sam Watson and Elaine Harvey.
University Staff Club A' are dominating mixed four after good wins over RI Tuesday/Thursday B' and Fulfordgate B'. The 5-4 victory over RI was clinched by Sue Scott and Garry Turner beating Paul Forth and Ellen Mooney 17-21, 21-15, 21-17.
Undefeated Scott and Turner starred again in the 8-1 home win over Fulfordgate. This time they recorded 152-121 but had to work hard to suppress Garry Hall and Jean Davison 21-14, 24-26, 23-21.
University C' maintained their top spot in mixed five after a tough 5-4 win at Market Weighton. Kevin Marshall and Miriam Beales took three home wins for 146-114, but the students hit back to take the match when James Barrett and Laura Kane beat Gavin Smith and Jane Wilkinson 12 and 16.
