IT will not have escaped you that Tour de France fever is gripping North Yorkshire this weekend.

But for anyone experiencing indifference over the Grand Depart, never fear, people have organised other things to do this weekend. Here's a selection of what else is going on in North Yorkshire:

  • The annual Duncombe Park steam rally is being held in Helmsley on Saturday and Sunday. It is expected to attract more than 45 full size steamers and 150 vintage cars and motorcycles. There will be stalls, a bar, can -can dancers and a fairground as well as caravan and camping spaces. Adult tickets are £8 and children £6.
  • The Capital of the North exhibition continues at the Yorkshire Museum, York, on Saturday and Sunday. Featuring some of the most prestigious and significant medieval objects ever found in Britain, this new exhibition tells the extraordinary story of how great swathes of the country were once ruled from within York's walls.
  • From Friday to Sunday, The Gait Inn at Millington is holding a festival, with an estimated 40 beers and ten ciders.
  • Dunnington in Bloom is holding a Hog Roast from 7.30pm on Saturday in the Reading Room, Church Street. Catering is by local butcher, Taylors and entertainment by Nigel Heap.  Tickets are still available at £10 from Roy Freer, 01904 488087
  • A secret garden behind a church in the centre of York is opening to be public for the first time this weekend. The garden is behind St Wilfrid’s Church, near York Minster, is on its way to a complete transformation and now boasts a lawn, where strawberry teas will be served, and herbaceous borders plus a wonderful view of York Minster.  The garden will be open from 12.30pm to 4pm on Saturday and admission is £2, which will be donated to the garden fund and CAFOD. The entrance is through Petergate House on High Petergate.
  • Outdoor big screens will be screening free films all day Saturday at Valley Gardens in Harrogate for people wanting to take picnic blankets. While the Yorkshire Grand Depart will be shown at 2.45pm (it can't be completely avoided), other films include  Despicable Me 2 (U) at 11am,Grease (PG), at 6pm and Pretty Woman (15) at 8pm.
  • The  Micklegate Singers will perform at the National Centre for Early Music, York, from 7.30pm on Saturday. The event promises a celebration of story-telling and song. Adult tickets are £12 and concessions £8 from 01904 658338.
  • On Sunday, at Valley Gardens in Harrogate, free screenings on the big screens will include Monsters University (U), at 10am; Frozen (U) at 11.45am, the Wimbledon men's final live at 1.45pm and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (12A) at 6pm.
  • Jackson's Wold garden in Malton is open to the public from 1pm to 5pm on Sunday.  The two acre garden offers stunning views of the Vale of Pickering. Homemade teas. Admission £3, children free
