I READ with interest Haydn Lewis's recent article on the Government's long-overdue realisation of the benefits children gain from singing.
Having been brought up in Wales in a TV, computer and telephone-free home, music was my life.
At school I lived for the Annual Eisteddfod (a festival of song, dance and poetry). Every year we competed for prizes to see which school house won the main silver cup.
Four years ago, at the suggestion of my granddaughter, I decided to try to recreate this love of music, together with all the related benefits for interested children in York, and so, the New Generation Singing Club was born.
We encourage children to learn to sing, to develop confidence and enjoy the camaraderie of belonging to a modern day club. We have a range of sheet music, CDs, karaoke-type sound system, plus a range of instruments.
With the help of volunteers, including University of York students, we meet each week, and a thoroughly enjoyable time is had by all.
The club is open to children aged between nine and 16 years, and currently has a few vacancies. Should anyone be interested in giving it a try, please phone me on 01904 790732.
