Bosses at the supermarket giant have published plans for an extension to their store in Clifton Moor, and the installation of a second floor inside the building.

They will expand the store to the rear to provide a larger base for its home delivery service and to make more floor space within the shop.

The plans also include a mezzanine floor - an open-plan floor suspended between the ground floor and the roof.

It will increase the ground floor area of the store by almost 2,900 sq m (2,400 sq yds), but will lead to the loss of 89 customer parking spaces. Alterations to footpaths near the roundabout are also included in the plan.

A spokeswoman for Tesco said the plan was aimed at increasing the products on offer to its customers.

She said: "We have applied for planning permission for an extension at the rear of the store and a mezzanine floor - which is basically an open plan floor between the ground and the roof - to create extra sales space.

"It is to extend our range and availability for our customers."

A planning application submitted to City of York Council is due to be considered by the east area planning sub-committee on Thursday..

Council officers recommended it be approved but attached a string of conditions relating to the development and its construction.

They said permission should be conditional on secure cycle parking being included, and safe access for pedestrians and bus users.

It also said that limits should remain on the amount of floor space that can be devoted to both non-food items and food items. There were no objections to the scheme from Clifton Without Parish Council, Clifton Moor Business Association or residents.

The Tesco store at Askham Bar, York, already has a mezzanine floor.
