IN The Press, (Demolition job, January 16), there was an article about another supermarket planned for Acomb, with the demolition of the public library.
Yes, we want a better library, and in the future Acomb will need another supermarket. It is sad still, that end of Acomb, with empty shops and houses.
There are better sites. Very soon there will be the closure of British Sugar. It has been mentioned that York City Football Club are, maybe, going to move there, or down near the railway line near the National Railway Museum.
Both sites offer better access to more customers. Some goods could be brought in using the existing railway line, not needing lorries to come into the city. Extra jobs may be created for the railway companies. Another benefit would be the removal of walls covered in graffiti.
It is clear that the libraries are on the move, and I hope the new Central Library will combine with the city archives. I am impressed with the new library at York St John University, which is a good example of what a modern library should be like. Well, 2007 is so far a big change, and I hope that on reflection, money will be spent wisely in creating facilities that are better than before.
