WHEN will the East Riding Council Authorities stop acting like ostriches and take their necks out of the sand?
We no longer live in caves and must make further progress, we do not need to preserve everything just because it is old.
I would recommend complete demolition of the existing road bridge at Stamford Bridge and replacement by a twin carriageway flat bridge.
I am sure this would not involve a lot more expense than constant repairs to the old bridge which is sure to be damaged again in the near future by the passage of some enormous piece of machinery which constantly passes over it. The traffic lights could be removed resulting in instant solving of most of our traffic problems.
We have long been held back by conservationists including Councillor Hilary Saynor who would have the old bridge retained at any cost simply because it is old. I served as clerk to the parish council for 18 years and have been a long time supporter of Councillor Saynor but occasionally she has made mistakes and this is one of her worst examples.
If anyone wishes to view an old bridge they only need to travel two or three miles in either direction up or down the river and we have Kexby, Buttercrambe and Elvington, all very similar design and age to Stamford Bridge.
