A controversial late goal saw City of York go down 3-2 at Newcastle University in the first division of the Northern League.

With the scores level after Nick Carter and Simon Grey strikes, City were denied a point when Matt Couttie attempted to make a tackle and was illegally blocked only for play to continue and Newcastle to grab the winning goal on the break.

York were without five players for the match and fell behind within the first two minutes following a well-executed penalty corner from the home team.

But City levelled through Carter at a short corner and took a 2-1 lead into the interval courtesy of Grey.

A determined Newcastle reorganised and netted again early in the second half before fortuitously claiming maximum points at the death.

City's seconds won their local NHL division two east derby clash against Harrogate seconds despite being ravaged by a spate of injuries and cry offs.

The decisive goal came ten minutes from the end with Geoff Gill finding himself loose at the break down of a short corner before finding Danny Turton, who fired into the roof of the net from inside of the D'.

City thirds were defeated 3-1 at Sheffield Bankers in Yorkshire League division one despite a lively start in which Andy Wilson and Ed Marsden both had goals disallowed before Matt Tipper opened the scoring with a sweet back stick strike on 20 minutes.

But Sheffield were level by the break and, while the visitors squandered several chances, took both of their second-half opportunities to seal victory.

City's fourths lost by the only goal after 25 minutes to a talented Leeds University in division three despite the best efforts of Dave Rodgers and Brian Ignatovic to keep the students at bay.

A short corner goal from captain Richard Tanner-Smith set City fifths on their way to a 2-1 win over Tadcaster in division four.

The outstanding Tom Feasby added the visitors' second goal with Tadcaster getting their consolation soon after the restart.

York sevenths romped to a 5-1 division eight triumph over Normanby Park with Andy Potts, James Woodhall, Steve Archer, Nick Kay and Neil Reader all on the scoresheet.

Leeds beat City eights 4-0 in division nine while the ninths were unlucky not to capitalise on a Jon Brown goal in a 2-1 reverse against Gainsborough Rose in division ten.
