I FEEL that East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC ) is primarily responsible for the closure for up to 12 weeks of the historic bridge at Stamford Bridge (Bridge of Sighs, The Press, January 15).

The council knows this is a Grade II listed bridge, and allows heavy traffic to use it, resulting in a number of significant structural defects to occur and almost annual repairs and delays.

A bypass has been discussed for about 50 years, but ERYC has not made this a priority, instead promoting a bypass for Beverley at a higher cost than would occur for Stamford Bridge.

ERYC should compensate residents of Stamford Bridge for the delays and inconvenience for the 12-week closure period: approximately £60 each for those using the bridge on a daily basis.

Annually, for the time lost in delays, about 30 minutes a week at £5 an hour equals £130 per year.

ONCE again there will be chaos at Stamford Bridge from March 5, when the said bridge is closed for three months for repairs caused by negligent drivers.

Is it not time to call in the Army to supply a Bailey Bridge for the interim?

There is a further worry - heavy traffic will once again seek to divert via Buttercrambe Bridge, and we will have repeat damage there again, with further closures and inconvenience.

When will the authorities grasp the nettle and give Stamford two bridges?
