A USER of York's new pay-as-you-go car hire scheme has earned the wrath of the city council's parking wardens.

The car, owned by car club operators WhizzGo, was plastered with tickets after it was left in a disabled parking bay in Bishopthorpe Road car park.

The cars are hired by the hour through the scheme, which is supported by City of York Council, and have dedicated spaces.

But eagle-eyed Diary reader Dale Minks spotted this offending vehicle and sent this picture, taken on Monday, to us. He said: "I imagine it had been there over the weekend.

"What's probably happened is that the driver could not get it into the WhizzGo Space. They must have thought they would put it in the disabled parking bay instead. But then I noticed a couple of wardens around it, and soon it had two tickets."

A City of York Council spokeswoman explained: "There are two dedicated WhizzGo car club bays in the Bishopthorpe Road car park.

"All car club members receive a handbook that clearly states that if these dedicated bays are full, they should leave the car in a standard bay, and then notify WhizzGo immediately.

"WhizzGo then notifies the council of the problem, to ensure that the vehicle does not receive a parking ticket, and also arranges for it to be moved as soon as possible.

"Unfortunately, it would appear that the car in question was left in a disabled parking bay on January 20, and WhizzGo was not notified of this.

"This meant that the council was not notified either, and the car therefore received a ticket on January 20 and a second on January 21."

MEMBERS of the York Amateur Radio Society were on the party wavelength when they celebrated their 60th anniversary.

The club welcomed to their celebration for the first time two amateur radio operators from Portland, Oregon, with whom they have been communicating across the airwaves.

Keith Cass, honorary secretary, said: "We're all extremely proud of the fact that we've been representing the city of York in transmitting all over the world for 60 years.

"We've been in touch over the radio with Marti and Jack from America for a long time - it was lovely to have a buffet supper with them at the party."
