I WOULD like to endorse I.M. Fox's letter (Blind Spot, Readers' Letters, January 23), regarding the hazards of cycling in York in darkness.

I used up another one of my many lives being knocked off my bike a couple of days ago. As a driver of 40 years and a cyclist for a lot longer, I am well aware of the needs of people cycling legally.

A really annoying habit of some car drivers is to hog the kerb in queuing traffic, forcing the bike into the middle of the road.

In the incident which I was involved it was dark, I had good lights front and back, I was where adults on cycles should be, on the road, but the woman driving the small 4x4 out on to Acomb Road did not even see me and set off as I passed her.

My immediate worry was the very good chance of a car driving over me as I lay in the road. I think I definitely have a guardian angel looking over me. Is it the many yobs cycling without lights on the paths which are distracting drivers from seeing what is on the road?

I saw a police van drive straight past one such miscreant recently and it did not bother stopping him.
