What is TransportAction?
In 1996, the Energy Saving Trust, sponsors of PlanetYork, set up a transport initiative (now called TransportAction) to deliver programmes and solutions to tackle the pollution problems caused by transport.

So what exactly does TransportAction do?
TransportAction covers a range of sustainable transport activities. The biggest are the PowerShift and CleanUp programmes.

TransportAction distributes grants to help with the cost of cleaning up' vehicles by switching to alternative fuels or retrofitting' emissions control equipment like particulate traps.

TransportAction grants help individual drivers and businesses, from one-man bands' to large fleet operators, to do their bit to clean up pollution.

TransportAction PowerShift
TransportAction PowerShift is building a sustainable market in the UK for new, small cars and vans which run on cleaner fuels. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and electricity are the common alternative fuels.

Thanks to lower fuel duty, these vehicles are much cheaper to run than petrol. It's now around 37p/litre for LPG, compared with 72p/litre for petrol! They also emit far fewer harmful pollutants and carbon dioxide (CO2), the main cause of climate change.

In order to kick-start' the market for clean fuel vehicles, PowerShift awards grants of up to 60 per cent towards the cost of converting an older vehicle - or buying a new one.

However, it is important to note that not all vehicles are eligible for grants: - Vehicles must be under five years old;

- Vehicles must be listed on the PowerShift Register - a list of all the vehicles approved to run on clean fuels which can be viewed on the TransportAction website.

TransportAction CleanUp
The CleanUp programme focuses on cutting pollution from heavy vehicles such as lorries, buses, refuse trucks and taxis. There are three ways you can clean up your vehicle: - converting the engine to run on natural gas or LPG;

- getting a new, cleaner engine; or- fitting particulate traps to the vehicle's exhaustTransportAction CleanUp awards grants of up to 75 per cent of the capital costs of retrofitting the equipment which cuts pollution. As well as financial support, CleanUp also offers help and advice on how to most cost-effectively cut pollution.
