SO here we go again - sting the motorist for larger fines (The Press, January 23).

While I agree with the findings on the use of mobile phones, I find it remarkable that no press article or Government directive has suggested the correct solution to the problem. Fines and points are only a quick fix, not the solution, but they do make lots of cash.

Let's look at the problem.

You purchase a car, to be told that you need a hands-free kit installed to abide by the law.

You employ a company to install the kit; they immediately pull a lot of interior out to install the wiring (you have just paid x thousands for this car). Yes, of course, they refit the interior, but it never goes back like new, plus there are brackets etcetera drilled into the dashboard (a complete bodge-up) and this costs you more cash. Is there any wonder that so many risk using the mobile phone hand-held model ?

From the start of the mobile phone revolution it was plain to see that holding a phone and driving was not the safest thing to do. The police do it, but we will be told they have had special training.

So why did the Government and police, with their knowledge of the dangers of this practice, not rule that all new vehicles from a certain date had to be factory-fitted with a hands-free mobile phone/kit? That was the solution to this issue. By now the majority of cars would have been fitted with the kits Malcolm Stainthorpe, Longacre, Swinton, Malton.
