Right off the bat, we have to establish that this isn't a review, but a recommendation to try a beer that I helped design and brew.
In early 2014 I won a brewing competition run by Siren (UK) and Omnipollo (SE) breweries: the first leg of the competition resulted in the brewing of Näcken – a fantastic hopfenweisse brewed with Rik Lindqvist, their Swedish winner.
This time we headed to Dugges brewery in Gothenburg to produce a gin-spired rye saison perfect for summer drinking. It has now reached England, sadly a little late for the summer sun, but it remains a vibrant and refreshing drink regardless.
My impressions of this beer can only be shaped by my experience helping to formulate and brew it, so take my words here with a pinch of salt. Or better yet, try it yourself and see what you think.
Pouring like cloudy lemonade, with a thin, rapidly dissipating white head, the initial aroma puts out juniper, lemon pith, and a nod towards scrumpy sourness. A touch of strawberry and earthy mulch provide contrast, on top of some bready yeast.
The flavour begins with lemon sherbert and dry hay, progressing into a slightly menthol, juniper note. Sandalwood and a slight warmth from the added black pepper rise towards the finish, alongside a moderate saison character.
The body is light, dry, and brightly carbonated, with a bright refreshing finish. This is a clean, crisp, saison with a subtle and delicate spicing, so enjoy it cool, fresh, and before the nights close in.
