I AM delighted that there is to be improved signage for Dunnington Industrial Estate and that the police are to be asked to enforce the weight restrictions through the centre of Dunnington village (HGV drivers urged to avoid village, January 12, and Cops must stop village trucks, January 17).
I would, however, like to point out to your readers that Dunnington Parish Council and one of its working groups first asked for the improved signage, and alerted the City of York Council to the problem of excess HGV traffic through the centre of the village, in 2005.
The parish council lobbied again in April last year and have been in correspondence about it since.
I am disappointed that no mention was made of this and no credit given to the parish council and its working group.
The working group delivered a letter to every business on the industrial estate, asking that suppliers and drivers be asked not to approach or leave through the centre of the village, in 2005.
This did not have the desired effect on traffic approaching the estate so, although I appreciate the council repeating the process, I am not sure what difference it will make. One problem is that some firms do not mention "industrial estate" in their address, so drivers do not realise the restrictions apply to them.
Could I, through your newspaper, please ask businesses to make sure that "industrial estate" is mentioned in their address?
Jenny Brooks, Chairman, Dunnington Parish Council, Water Lane, Dunnington, York.
