EVERY pound raised by women in Race For Life goes to scientists working on ways to beat cancer.
Although efforts in recent years have raised £20 million for this cause, Race For Life organisers believe lots more money can be raised - mainly because almost half of all women who take part do not raise any sponsorship money.
David Martin, organiser of this year's York and Harrogate races, said: "Fifty-three per cent of women taking part do send in sponsorship money, but that leaves 47 per cent of women who don't.
"All the money that is raised through Race For Life goes directly to scientists for research into cancers that touch women's lives.
"The money from the entry fee goes towards running the event. It's really important for people to raise money as it is sponsorship money that will make a difference.
"This year, we've asked women to try to raise £50 each. There are lots of tips to get more money such as start the form off with your most generous sponsor such as your boss or partner and hope people will follow suit with their pledges."
Here are some other suggestions for boosting that all-important sponsorship total - Ask your manager or personnel team at work if your company will Match Give'. Often your company will match the amount you and any colleagues raise as a donation. This is a tax-efficient way for them to give to charity and is very common.
- Talk about Race For Life with everyone you know and ask them to sponsor you whatever they can afford. Often they'll pledge a set amount so try to collect it there and then to save yourself time after the event.
- Show people your sponsor form and make sure they fill in their name, address and postcode and tick the Gift Aid box. By doing this, Cancer Research UK can claim an extra 28 per cent of the money you raise from the government, meaning you're raising extra money with no extra work.
- Make sure your most generous sponsor is at the top of the form, that way people will match their contributions, making your efforts even more successful.
- Why not send distant friends and relatives an email or e-postcard from the Race For Life website: www.raceforlife.co.uk - Make it fun! Why not find sponsors by hosting a party or coffee morning? Or raise extra money by running a sweepstake on how long it will take you to do the 5km on the day.
